Tips in Implementing Effective Softball Drills
If you want to be a good softball player, you not only have to be good in hitting the ball but must also know the perfect way to throw it. You have to develop a good throwing arm in order to be an all around softball player. There are softball players that they seem to have been born with exceptional throwing skills. You too can be a good softball thrower if you practice a lot and do some softball drills that will develop your throwing skills. But what if you are coaching a softball team? What type of softball drills do you have to implement? Softball throwing drills are important to perk up the distance and accuracy.
During your softball drills for throwing, try to run them at half-speed in the beginning then increase the pace as time progresses. If you have a player who wants to practice the motions slowly, make him or her go first. This is a great way to avoid acquiring unnecessary injuries. It also helps your player to feel first the right way of doing it then he can speed things up later on once he is accustomed to the drill.
The four corner’s drill is a great way to develop the throwing condition of your players as well as their quick sprints and throwing accuracy from the first base to the third. You begin by having all your infield players line up behind the 2nd base while one player is at the first base. You must also have one of your players at home plate with a lot of balls in a bucket. Then, let the batter hit the ball in the direction of the second base. Then the first player in the line will field the ball and throw it over to the first base, while the player on the first base who receives the ball will sprint to the third base before the player at first base throws the ball at his direction.
To continue, make sure that the fielder is in the proper position when receiving while at the third base. Make sure that his left foot touches the home plate side of the base. When the player catches the ball from the first base, he then sprint towards the home plate and give the ball to the batter. He then runs to first base before the player from the second base throws him a ball. Once the player completes his throw to the third, he then sprints to the back of the line at the second base and wait until he has another chance at playing fielder.
Keep in mind that this softball drill must be done in a fast paced manner. It requires your player to run a lot, so make sure that your players are given enough break so they can drink some water and rest a bit once they have done the drill. In doing the drill, make sure to use about five of your players to make the most of your practice time and no one is just standing around.
